Helo Squadron Delivers Holiday Cheer to Ships in the Persian Gulf

Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron (HM) 15, forward deployed to Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain, has delivered more than 88,000 pounds of mail to ships operating in the 5th Fleet area of operations since the holiday season began Nov. 22.

Senior Chief Aviation Ordinanceman Tony Pineda, leading chief petty officer of HM-15’s Bahrain detachment, said since just before Thanksgiving, deliveries of care packages, greeting cards and Christmas presents have made up more than half of the Sea Dragon’s cargo.

Pineda, from Corpus Christi, Texas, said the squadron’s primary mission while assigned to Bahrain is minesweeping operations in support of maritime security operations (MSO). However, due to the cargo and vertical onboard delivery capacities of the MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopters, they also take freight and mail to several U.S. and coalition ships conducting MSO in and around the Persian Gulf region.
