Oman's largest firm takes on ex-Tory MP

A former UK Shadow Solicitor-General is joining Oman's biggest law firm as it looks to swell its ranks. Former Conservative MP Nick Hawkins is joining Al Alawi Mansoor Jamal & Co (AMJ) as a senior associate specialising in banking law and business development. It is understood that the firm has recruited two other lawyers, who will be joining the firm in the near future.

Hawkins spent the past eight years as an MP representing Surrey Heath and was appointed Shadow Solicitor-General in 2003. Hawkins said he always planned to move back into private practice and after two terms in opposition did not feel up to a third. Before becoming an MP, Hawkins was group legal adviser at Lloyds Asset Life and practised at the bar for seven years from chambers in Birmingham and North-ampton. Al Alawi Mansoor is one of the biggest law firms in Oman with 24 lawyers. The firm's practice areas include capital markets, corporate, project finance and litigation and arbitration.
